Day 6, Here's Hoping...

Yesterday was a bit of a let down. I didn't log my smoking and didn't make an attempt to cut back. I just behaved normally. Over brunch I spoke with an acquaintance who is on Quit Day plus three and taking Chantix. He claimed he didn't consciously cut back but did as a result of the drug. Cigarettes became unappealing, he claimed. Now I am only beginning day six on the drug but I have yet to experience anything like that. And I was hoping too. Hoping something would happen to make smoking less desirable thus easier to quit. Quit Day is technically four days away. We shall see. As for today I am back to logging my habit and doing the Get Quit exercises.

How wonderful to have a real-life friend just ahead of you on the Chantix journey! I, too, didn't cut back at all until the Chantix started making smoking less appealing. For me, it was somewhere a few days after the first full dose on Day 8 that it really just kicked in. For others, it happens sooner. Keeping track and doing the GetQuit exercises sounds like the perfect thing for you, and I know that you'll do just fine. Keep going!

Somewhere in all my Chantix reading before I started on the meds, I read that Day 8 being the Quit Day is not written in stone. For some folks, quit day is less than 8 days, for others it's more. If I remember correctly, it's anywhere from 4 - 12 days and 8 is just the average number of days. So, imho, I wouldn't feel locked into day 8 being the magical quit day because it's not the same for everybody. Maybe for you, it's just a little longer, that's all. Hang it there, it will happen for you, Chris!

I agree with the others. Myself, I didn't know any better and thought that I had to quit on day 8 so I did. I wasn't ready and the first 4 or 5 days were really hard. I kept wondering why Chantix wasn't helping me. If I would have kept smoking until I was ready, I probably would have quit on about day 13 or 14. As it is, I feel like I was cheated out of an easier quit. lol

I've read some quitting at 3 days and have read where it took some as long as 3 wks. The results were the same and they were all successful at quitting.

So, just take it a day at a time and quit when you feel ready. You'll shock yourself when that day comes and it will.

You'll do it...hang in there and don't beat yourself up! You'll do great!

About the Day 8 thing not being written in stone, I kind of went off on this one day when I was actually crying about some folks who were trying it because they thought they "had to" to do it on Day 8 when they didn't feel ready and then didn't make it. I knew I wasn't ready on that day. Some are, some aren't. Anyway, I got all revved up and wrote this post: Dear Chantix Prescribers.

Whatever day you pick, it should be the one that you think will work best for you, and we'll all end up non-smokers in the end ;)
